Today's plenary session did not take place according to the set agenda, being postponed to a later date. The Speaker of the Assembly, Niko Peleshi, has announced in a reaction that the decision to postpone it by one week is related to the tense situation in the country.

In a public statement, the Speaker explains that the decision was taken to ensure the smooth conduct of the Assembly's proceedings and to avoid any circumstances that could increase tensions. He also mentions the information that, according to him, law enforcement institutions have forwarded about dangerous scenarios that could violate order and security.

The Speaker of the Parliament has called on politics, institutions and society to choose dialogue and avoid escalating the situation. According to him, despite political differences, the common interest should be to maintain peace and stability in the country.

Peleshi dedicates an important part of his response to students and young people, emphasizing that they have the right to demand more from institutions and to be heard. He states that their protests and demands should be treated seriously, while opposing the involvement of minors and students in situations of violence.

Full statement

I consider it a state and national obligation to share with public opinion an explanation for today, the day of a plenary session for the Albanian Parliament, as well as a position on the situation the country is going through.

With the responsibility to guarantee a peaceful session, where every deputy has the constitutional and legal space to exercise his state duty, in the face of an unprecedented situation of violence against state institutions, public property and the private property of citizens; in light of the worrying data from law enforcement institutions about dangerous scenarios that are seriously violating public order, security and tranquility in our country and in order not to give any reason for provocation, I decided to postpone the plenary session scheduled for today by one week.

Today is the day when every statesman, every political party, every non-profit organization, representatives of the academic and business elite, and every decent citizen of this country must appeal to our reason and national instinct for peace.

We live in a democracy. We have different political orientations. We have different interests. We argue, we get angry, we protest. But above every change lies a common national interest, a common land: our Albania.

Our students, pupils, and children will inherit this country, and with it the responsibility to make it better.

They have the right to demand more and better from us.

They have the right to be heard more.

They have the right to sit more often at the common tables that they won for themselves by raising their voices, like the University Pact Table.

Our students will be the first Albanians to emerge into life as Europeans, part of the great family of the European Union.

Therefore, the recent incidents of violence, arson, and looting, which are being deliberately blamed on them, are a great harm to all of us.

Albania has waited a long time.

Albania has worked hard.

Albania deserves to enter the EU as an equal.

Nothing is guaranteed, because this process is not in our hands alone and not everyone is friendly and kind. This is all the more true in a geopolitical time full of tensions and influence games, especially in our troubled region of the Western Balkans.

This process can be hindered by malignant forces, but it should in no way be hindered or disrupted by us, the modern Albanians of the 21st century.

Therefore, as Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, as a citizen and as a student of December '90, I call for restraint and reflection.

Our society must hold its breath and react unanimously to keep minors and high school students away from violence.

They should not be fed with hatred. They should not be shaped by street violence. They should not be left in the hands of dark forces, with un-Albanian intentions.

We must all be together here, regardless of political differences: democrats, socialists or non-aligned. Children are the highest interest of a country. As they are educated today, so will Albania be tomorrow.

Once again, let us call upon reason. Let us show that we hold the fate of our country in our own hands, alongside our strategic allies, with the ideal of Albanianism of the Rilindas in our hearts.

Let's sit down. Let's talk. Let's discuss and debate about the future, never forgetting that, above all, we are all Albanians.
