Solar storm

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night as the sky has turned red to green: the only working device in the house is the old battery-operated radio.

All other electronic devices are down, while if you get the news, it will talk about plane crashes, fires, entire cities without power, etc.

You might think you are experiencing the third world war. In fact, it is not like that at all.

This situation with unimaginable consequences originates in a solar storm.

It can take the world back to the pre-industrial era and block it for months, even years.

Billions of protons and electrons

It may take us decades to get back to where we are today.

The cause of this catastrophe could be an electromagnetic storm, like the one that in 1859 blocked telegraphic communication all over the world.

Yes, it can be even more serious, writes Roger Dube in "The Conversation".

The professor of science at the Rochester Institute of Technology shows what could happen if a storm of this nature hits the planet today.

Solar storms can release billions of protons and electrons into a superheated plasma sphere in the solar system. It happens that 1 in 20 of these spheres are directed towards the Earth's orbit.

One third the speed of light

From a scientific point of view, a solar storm occurs when a large-scale magnetic outburst causes mass to be ejected from the Sun's surface.

This releases charged particles into the sun's atmosphere at very high speeds. The most important particles, protons, can travel at a speed of 1/3 that of light, i.e. 100,000 km per second.

At this speed, it will take them only 30 minutes to reach Earth. They must pass through the magnetosphere, which protects the Earth from such particles.

After entering this layer, they are directed to the magnetic field lines in such a way that they manage to enter the atmosphere near the North and South Poles.

If the solar storm is small in size, the effect will be similar to the 1989 storm, which left 6 million people in Canada without power for about 9 hours. But if the storm is great, so will the consequences on Earth.

Without electricity, water and internet for years

If a solar storm has the proportions of that of 1859, it would "crack" the electrical grids of the entire planet, destroy digital and analog communications, according to a study of the US Academy of Sciences.

That means no lights for years, no internet. Industries will stop, transport will be blocked.

It would run out of the last oil and gasoline left in the tanks of the electrically operated pumps.

Stores would not be supplied with food.

We would have to go back to the land to grow our own food. The water would not come to our taps at home and we would have to follow the rivers.

We would live without a refrigerator and cook with fire.

Alternative energy

Only electric cars would be able to operate, provided they were powered by solar power plants.

We would have to rebuild the world electrical grid and look for alternative energy sources like solar plants.

A solar storm can erupt at any moment.

With the technology that humanity possesses today, we can only know this 3 days before the consequences reach Earth.
