Study: Life on Earth may have started earlier than thought

Life on Earth may have started about 1.5 billion years earlier than previously thought, according to a new study.

Scientists were widely of the opinion that animals first appeared on Earth 635 million years ago, but the latest study, led by a research team at Cardiff University, has found signs of a much earlier ecosystem.

The ecosystem was found in the Franceville Basin near Gabon. The study describes an episode of underwater volcanic activity after two continents collided "We already know that increased concentrations of marine phosphorus and seawater oxygen are linked to an episode of biological evolution about 635 million years ago. Our study adds another, much earlier episode, 2.1 billion years ago," said Dr Ernest Chi Fru, lead author of the study.

The research team found environmental changes that may have triggered evolution. But life forms did not develop at that time, according to the researchers. This was due to the limited nature of the water body and the poor conditions that existed for billions of years later.
