The skeleton of a large dinosaur has managed to sell for 44.6 million dollars at a Sotheby's auction in New York City. This is the largest amount ever paid for a fossil.

Named Apex, the dinosaur ranks among the most complete skeletons ever found.

It was sold to an anonymous buyer who said "Apex was born in America and will stay in America", and this is implied by foreign media that it may be loaned to an American institution.

Apex was accidentally discovered by a paleontologist in 2022 in the western US state of Colorado.

"The best stegosaurus ever to appear at auction, 'Apex' made history today by selling for $44.6 million at Sotheby's to become the most expensive fossil ever sold at auction," Sotheby's said in a statement.

The auction house added that the fossil exceeded its presale estimate by more than 11 times. 7 interested buyers participated in the auction for the sale of the largest "stegosaurus" fossil ever found.

Apex was discovered by Jason Cooper, a professional fossil hunter. Cooper named it Apex because its large dimensions would have made it a dominant animal in its environment. Apex is believed to have existed about 150 million years ago.

It should be noted that the previous record for the sale of dinosaur fossils was set in 2020, when a Tyrannosaurus Rex, known as Stan, managed to sell for 31.8 million dollars.
