Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin signed a decree on Wednesday to rename Europe Square, in central Moscow, Eurasia Square.
The square was inaugurated in 2002, as part of the Russian-Belgian project, which symbolized European unity.
The flags of the 48 European countries were being flown in the square in March 2023 when they were removed without explanation.
In this square is a monument called "The Abduction of Europe" by sculptor Olivier Strebel.
It is not yet known if the monument will be removed from there.
