Sean Penn won his third Oscar at the 2026 Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday night, but the actor was not present to personally accept the trophy.
He was named Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw in the Paul Thomas Anderson film "One Battle After Another." However, Penn was unable to attend the ceremony as he was out of the country at the time.
Accepting the award on his behalf was actor Kieran Culkin, winner of the same category last year for his role in the film "A Real Pain." During his moment on stage, Culkin also joked, saying that Penn "couldn't be here tonight, or maybe he didn't want to be," so he would accept the award on his behalf.
This is Penn's third Oscar win. He previously won Best Actor for his roles in "Mystic River" in 2004 and "Milk" in 2009. During his career, he has also been nominated in the same category for his performances in "Dead Man Walking," "Sweet and Lowdown" and "I Am Sam."
For his role in "One Battle After Another," Penn previously won Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTA Film Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards in February. He also missed those ceremonies.
In this year's Best Supporting Actor competition, Penn faced off against several industry heavyweights, including his co-star Benicio del Toro, "Sentimental Value" star Stellan Skarsgård, "Sinners" actor Delroy Lindo, and Jacob Elordi, who stars in Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein."
Although he was excused by the fact that he was abroad, Sean Penn's absence from the 2026 Academy Awards ceremony is not very surprising, as the actor has often expressed a noticeable distance from award ceremonies.
In an interview this year with Newsweek magazine, Penn admitted that he is uncomfortable with the whole ceremony that accompanies the film industry's major awards.
“It's not that I don't want to win the award, but everything that comes with it – all the greetings, smiles and formalities – creates a kind of social anxiety for me,” he said.
The actor added that even when he won an Oscar for his role in "Mystic River" in 2004, the main feeling he experienced was not personal triumph, but relief that the film crew was not disappointed.
"I felt more relief than celebration, because a lot of people had invested a lot in that film," he said.
Penn has also been critical of the awards institution itself. At a press conference during the Marrakech International Film Festival in 2024, he stated that he is not very enthusiastic about the Oscars.
"I don't get too excited about what we call the Oscars," the actor said, adding that he believes the Academy has often shown "an extraordinary fear that limits imagination and cultural expression."
These statements make it less suspicious that the actor was not present to personally receive his third statue at this year's ceremony, added to this is Kieran Culkin's joke.
