Why does curly hair exist?

Curly hair can be difficult to manage, brush and care for, but it has an important advantage, besides being very attractive, writes focus.it.

Curly hair provides the best protection for the head from sunlight and heat, and this may be one of the reasons why this trait evolved in early hominids in Africa, while straight hair only appeared when some people moved into areas and cooler latitudes.

The reason our ancestors lost body hair but had a thick scalp is precisely to keep our heads from overheating in the sun.

To explore the theory of the thermoregulatory function of hair, a group of researchers from Penn State University (USA) led by Tina Lasisi made a mannequin equipped with thermal sensors wear three wigs, one made of straight human hair and the other two with curly hair.

After exposing the mannequin to simulated solar radiation in a controlled environment, the researchers measured which hair dissipated the heat best.

Very curly hair, similar to that of people of recent African descent, has been shown to be the most efficient at insulating the head from heat.

The study is important because it is the first study to look at hair type from an evolutionary perspective.
