The Meta company has donated $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump's inaugural fund, the company confirmed to CNN.
The news comes two weeks after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's private meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago. The donation was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
CNN has reported that Zuckerberg is aiming for a more active role in shaping the next administration's tech policies. This represents a major turnaround from almost four years ago, when Meta banned Trump from his platforms after the January 6, 2021 uprising.
Before the election, Zuckerberg had gradually shown a closer relationship with Trump. In an interview over the summer, the Facebook founder said Trump's response to an assassination attempt in July was "extraordinary."
“Seeing Donald Trump get up after being shot in the face and raise his fist high with the American flag is one of the most extraordinary things I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said during an interview on the podcast “The Circuit” at Meta’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California.
A number of senior executives at some of America's biggest technology companies — including Apple's Tim Cook, Google's Sundar Pichai and Amazon's Andy Jassy — had sought meetings with Trump before Election Day in November, aiming to secure an audience with the presidential candidate during a highly competitive race.
For his part, Trump appears to have enjoyed warm relations with the tech titans. He has boasted of private conversations with them in interviews and appearances and now praises the companies he once blamed for his 2020 election loss, which had brought years of Republican-led attacks on tech companies.
By March, Trump had called Facebook an “enemy of the people” in an interview with CNBC, sending shares of Meta, the parent company, down more than 4% on the day of the announcement. Trump had also previously threatened to jail “election fraudsters,” including Zuckerberg, whom he appeared to refer to in a July post on his Truth Social platform.
