Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands and Slovenia have announced they will boycott Eurovision 2026, after the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) decided not to hold a vote to exclude Israel from the upcoming contest, despite numerous calls from participating broadcasters.

The decision was made at the EBU General Assembly, where the majority of members agreed that there was no need for further discussions on Israel's participation, thus allowing its participation in the contest.

Broadcasters linked the boycott to the war in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis, stating that participating in the event is incompatible with their values ??and public responsibilities. Ireland's RTÉ stressed that the situation in Gaza makes it impossible for the country to participate in Eurovision, while Spanish broadcaster RTVE criticized the lack of transparency and the rejection of its request for a secret vote on Israel's participation.

The Spanish Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, openly supported the boycott, saying that culture must stand on the side of peace and justice.

Both the Netherlands' Avrotros and Slovenia's RTVSLO stated that participation contradicted their institutional values, especially at a tense political and humanitarian moment. Meanwhile, several countries, such as Britain and Germany, confirmed their participation and supported the EBU's decision.

To address the criticism, the EBU adopted new rules against excessive promotion by governments and third parties, but these changes were considered insufficient by the countries that imposed the boycott.
