A jeweled Easter gift to the mother of the last Russian Tsar has been sold in London for a record price of 26 million euros. The Winter Egg, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II in 1913 as a gift for his mother, Empress Maria Feodorovna, has been described as one of Faberge's most luxurious imperial creations.

Made of crystal and engraved with a frost motif on the inside, the outside is decorated with platinum snowflakes paired with diamonds.

It sold on Tuesday for 26 million euros, Christie's in London said, breaking the previous world auction record for a Faberge work by more than 13 million pounds.

The previous record was set in 2007 when the Rothschild Egg sold for £8.9 million. Christie's said it was the third time the Winter Egg had set a record price for a Faberge work.

“Today’s result sets a new world auction record for a Faberge work, confirming the enduring significance of this masterpiece and celebrating the brilliance of what is widely considered one of Faberge’s finest creations, both technically and artistically. Given that only a few Imperial Easter eggs remain in private hands, this was an extraordinary and historic opportunity for collectors to acquire a work of unparalleled significance,” said Margo Oganesian, Head of Faberge and Russian Art at Christie’s.

After the Russian Revolution of 1917, it was transferred from St. Petersburg to the Kremlin Armoury in Moscow, along with many other valuable items of the imperial family.

In the 1920s, the Soviet government began selling off art treasures from the Hermitage Museum and other collections, often for a fraction of their value.

The Winter Egg was purchased by London antiques dealer Wartski for €512, then sold to a British collector in 1934 for just over €1,700, before later being sold to another.

It was believed to be lost for two decades, from 1975 until 1994, when it was sold at Christie's for a world record of €7.7 million. In 2002, Christie's resold it for a record €8.2 million.

The price reflects how rare the Imperial Fabergé Eggs are, and it has been 23 years since one has appeared at auction. Only 50 were produced and the Winter Egg is one of seven remaining in the hands of unknown individuals. The others are either missing or in museums.

Each egg took a year to make, and the Tsars usually ordered them only shortly after receiving the last shipment.

Made of translucent quartz, the Winter Egg resembles a piece of frosted ice.

It is crossed by a platinum snowflake motif and inside holds the surprise of a flower basket with white quartz anemones, jade, and garnets.
