Italy cancels Kanye West and Travis Scott concerts

Italy has banned two concerts by American rappers Kanye West and Travis Scott scheduled for July in the northern city of Reggio Emilia, authorities said on Saturday. The local prefect, Salvatore Angieri, ordered the cancellations due to concerns about public order and security, including the possibility of protests.

West, also known as Ye, has faced a wave of cancellations across Europe this summer after years of anti-Semitic statements, including comments praising Adolf Hitler and the release of material with Nazi symbolism.

Scott, meanwhile, has faced increased scrutiny over security at his concerts since the tragedy at the Astroworld festival in Houston in 2021, where a crowd crush left 10 people dead and hundreds injured.

Scott was scheduled to perform at the Pulse of Gaia festival on July 17 at the 103,000-seat RCF Arena, while Ye was scheduled to take the stage a day later. Angieri said the decision was made following requests from consumer organization CODACONS and the Jewish community in Modena and Reggio Emilia, who had expressed particular concerns about Ye.

Authorities cited the close timing of the two concerts and the large influx of spectators expected within 24 hours as factors leading to their ban. They also highlighted the cancellation of other Ye concerts in Europe and the “concrete risk” of protests.

In April, the UK refused Ye entry to the country on the grounds that his presence would not be in the public interest. Later that month, he also postponed a concert in Marseille after it was reported that the French government had requested his ban, while concerts in Poland and Switzerland were cancelled.

Ye, who has apologized for his previous statements and said they were related to untreated bipolar disorder, has continued to perform in venues that have welcomed him and is expected to hold a concert in Istanbul later on Saturday.

He is also expected to perform in the Netherlands next month, after the Dutch migration minister said there were no legal grounds to bar him from entering the country. There was no immediate comment from Ye, Scott or the event's organizers in Italy.
