The magnificent villa where Al Capone, the famous mobster who ruled a crime empire lived and died, has been completely destroyed.

According to footage published by local media in Miami, the gangster's house was destroyed despite efforts to save it.

An architectural preservation organization unsuccessfully collected thousands of signatures to prevent the demolition of Al Capone's house.

The mansion was in mint condition after a multi-million dollar renovation. The restorers emphasized that its demolition would be "the loss of an important part of not only local history, but also that of the United States."

The value of the giant house was 15.5 million dollars. Al Capone bought it in 1928 for $40,000, just before he was caught by the authorities.

As a house it was built in 1922, in a Spanish style, including a swimming pool, a private beach and seven rooms. Al Capone owned that villa until his death on January 25, 1947, aged 48.
