Child refuses to wear seatbelt on plane, flight to Canada canceled. Incident sparks debate

A Porter Airlines flight in Canada was forced to return to the terminal after a young child refused to buckle up, causing the trip to be canceled and a wide-ranging debate over the safety and behavior of children on planes.

The incident occurred on August 6, on a flight departing from Victoria to Toronto. According to the airline, the child was standing on his seat and refused to buckle up. Attempts by the accompanying parent and crew to persuade the child were unsuccessful.

"The aircraft could not take off in these unsafe conditions," Porter Airlines said, explaining that the crew decided to return to the terminal and disembark the child and parent.

Due to the delay, the runway was closed after midnight and passengers were forced to travel on a flight scheduled for the next day.

Child safety expert Lia Tuso told the BBC that the crew's decision was necessary for the safety of all passengers. She said children without seatbelts could become projectiles during turbulence, especially during take-off and landing, just like unchecked baggage, which could collide with passengers in turbulence or during take-off and landing.

The incident has sparked an online debate over the tolerance that airlines should have towards traveling families and how strictly parents should enforce airline rules.

Some criticize parents for a lack of discipline, while others point out that children may be afraid of flying and not necessarily intend to disrupt the trip.
