Artificial Intelligence ( AI ) burst into the technology sphere in 2023 with the popularity of OpenAI's chatbot , ChatGPT , at the same time the technological revolution for the year we are leaving behind.
Seeing the success of ChatGPT, many big tech companies started their work to bring similar AI tools.
But will AI continue to grow further and what can we expect in 2024 in the wake of technological developments?
Euronews Next brings a "scenario" and list of technological trends to come, starting next year.
Artificial Intelligence (Emotional)
Generative AI – the technology behind the ChatGPT chatbot, which learns data patterns and generates new data in text or image form – was the rage of 2023.
But next year, there will also be Emotional Artificial Intelligence, which notices and interprets human emotional signals, according to the CEO of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT Digital), Federico Menna.
"'Emotion AI' is the next technology trend behind generation because, in addition to being able to generate content based on user interaction or request, Emotional Artificial Intelligence is able to react and understand human emotions in front of the machine and react to according to the circumstances", he told Euronews Next.
Menna said he expects it to be key for the health sector as well, as it will allow people with chronic illnesses or mental health problems to live better.
He expects Emotional Artificial Intelligence to flourish in the mobility sector as well.
“In the inner city environment, 'emotional AI' can play a big role. Someone, for example, can be anxious if they walk through a dark city and an algorithm can turn on some lights," he said.
Responsibility for Regulation of Artificial Intelligence
Generative AI will be important and will "revolutionize" businesses through software development in daily operations, said Jitendra Putcha, European vice president of data, analytics and AI at technology consulting firm LTIMindtree.
He believes every industry – from the travel industry to media companies – will benefit from the technology, which not only boosts creativity, but can also reduce costs, improve training and increase privacy and security.
"What's exciting is that AI is becoming more accessible, moving beyond the big tech companies thanks to the convergence of 'cloud' and 'open source,'" Putcha told Euronews Next.
But, citing the well-known animated character "Spiderman", he said that "with great power comes great responsibility".
"We have a magic wand in our hand that can do wonders, however as counselors, technologists and adopters, we have a responsibility to use it in the right context for the right thing and with the right guardrails in place," the expert emphasized.
Regulation of this technology will also become a big topic for AI companies as at the end of 2023 Europe and the United States agree on new AI legislation on their continents.
While the EU's official adoption of the Artificial Intelligence Act is expected in 2024, the act will set specific rules for providers of AI systems in areas such as transparency, documentation and testing.
While Artificial Intelligence is still on the horizon, it may have reached its peak and space technology could be the next big sensation in 2024.
"I strongly believe that the year 2024 will bring an even greater advance in space technology. Just like today, everyone starts a conversation with AI, people will talk a lot more about space technology because of some trends that are happening," Adam Niewinski, co-founder and general partner of the European venture capital firm, told Euronews. OTB Ventures.
In terms of the type of space technology that will be innovating for 2024, it won't be space travel, but satellites.
Technology allows people to detect what is happening on our planet, such as weather disasters, but we can also predict weather patterns and better understand the melting of ice and how we should manage water resources.
Quantum and cyber security
In 2023, the technology company "IBM" made progress in the field of quantum computing, getting closer to finding a solution to minimize errors in quantum data.
In 2024, there will be considerable focus on how quantum computing can enhance Internet security. This is expected to be a major topic of discussion and exploration.
The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is working to finalize post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards. This global project, spanning eight years, aims to develop cryptographic methods that can withstand attacks by powerful quantum computers.
The completion of the NIST project is expected to mark the beginning of a fundamental transition in cybersecurity. This transition aims to protect data and digital infrastructure from possible attacks by quantum computers.
