The "Iron Lady" of Estonia, soon the chief diplomat of the EU?
Kaja Kallas

The heads of the EU decided on Thursday at the Brussels summit on the new leadership names in the EU. Josep Borrell's successor is expected to be the Estonian Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas. 47-year-old Kaja Kallas knows European politics well.

Almost at the finish, as the new names that will have to lead the EU must also be approved by the European Parliament.

The 27 heads of the EU decided on Thursday by majority to appoint Ursula von der Leyen as president of the European Commission.

Italy abstained, after there was dissatisfaction with the appointments.

Antonio Costa appointed as head of the EU Council. Meanwhile, the Estonian Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, is expected to be the new EU Commissioner for Foreign Policy, thus replacing the current Commissioner, Josep Borrell. EU leaders decided on Thursday on its candidacy at the Brussels summit.

However, Kallas still has several hurdles to overcome before she is finally appointed as the EU's top diplomat.

Kallas himself has stated that if we are talking about the position of foreign policy officer, it is only about a candidacy. In an interview for Estonian public radio, Kallas said that, on Thursday (we are talking about the EU summit where the names of important positions in the EU are determined, ed.) it is not yet decided who will be in charge of future EU foreign policy. It is only about who will be the candidate". But this is "a great honor for me and Estonia".

Kalla's plans were to become the Secretary General of NATO, but to some in NATO she was considered a politician with a harsh language. On the Middle East conflict, however, she takes a more balanced line than Borrell, who is considered close to the Palestinians.

A family with a political tradition

47-year-old Kaja Kallas knows European politics well and is a highly sought-after politician at EU summits. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Kallas has demanded that Ukraine be helped quickly and efficiently.

Kallas takes an open stance against Russian President Putin and is on Russia's wanted list. "He wants us to be afraid, but with this we would give him what he will achieve. That's why we shouldn't be afraid", said Kallas in an interview for Estonian radio.

Kallas is regarded in Estonia as the "Iron Lady", although she has little in common with the former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

She comes from a family with a political tradition.

In 1991, after Estonia's independence from Russia, her father, Siim Kallas, became Minister of Foreign Affairs and Finance. It was Siim Kallas who negotiated Estonia's membership in the EU and NATO, as Estonian Prime Minister in 2002-2003. Siim Kallas was also EU commissioner for currency and economic affairs.

Before politics, Kallas made a career as a lawyer. By engaging in politics, Kallas became an MEP and then the first prime minister of Estonia, the country that has a direct border with Russia, where a large Russian minority lives. Maja Kallas with her friendly but firm attitude has made Estonia have weight in the EU.

Kallas's popularity is declining in Estonia

The German media, "tagesschau" analyzes Kalla's transition from national politics to that of the EU, stating that this step may also have internal political reasons. Kalla's political popularity has suffered greatly following the severe austerity measures taken by her government. In the European elections, Kalla's reform party ranked third with about 17.9%.

The EU does not really have a foreign minister, because diplomacy is considered a primarily national task. Instead, for around 15 years, the EU has had a "High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy", who heads the European External Affairs Service (EEAS) with around 4,500 staff and is also part of the EU Commission- of. /DW
