Chronicle journalist assassinated in Mexico, executed near his home

A journalist specializing in reporting on public security issues has been killed in the Mexican state of Puebla, adding to concerns about violence against media workers in the country.

The victim, Josue Martinez, was the director of the news agency Noticias San Martín Texmelucan, where he mainly reported on security issues and criminal events. The media freedom organization Article 19 has urged authorities to investigate the killing, taking his work as a journalist as a key lead.

The government of the state of Puebla also condemned the murder and called for a full investigation into the incident.

According to local media, Martinez was shot dead just a few meters from his apartment by two people riding a motorcycle. His son was also with him at the time of the attack, and he immediately notified the police.

Also known by the nickname "El Jaguar", Josue Martinez was a lawyer by profession, but later devoted himself to journalism. He was also a member of the human rights association Cre-Arte.

His killing comes just weeks after the confirmed death of journalist Roxana Guzmán, who was kidnapped from her home in Veracruz state. In June, independent journalist Luis Ángel López Valdés was also killed, despite being under protection by authorities due to previous threats.

According to the organization Article 19, at least 10 journalists have been killed in Mexico since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024, ranking the country among the most dangerous in the world for journalists outside war zones.

Meanwhile, the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reported that nine journalists were killed in Mexico in 2025. According to its data, at least 150 murders of media workers have been recorded in the country since 1994.
