A judge in New Mexico on Friday dismissed the case against actor Alec Baldwin. The decision was made while the litigation continued. The judge also ruled that this type of lawsuit cannot be filed against Baldwin again.

Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case based on police and prosecution violations, which withsaw evidence from the defense about producer Halyna Hutchins' shooting death during the filming of the film "Rust."

Baldwin cried in the courtroom and hugged his lawyers after the verdict was announced.

At the request of prosecutors, a grand jury renewed charges in January against actor Alec Baldwin for negligent homicide during the fatal 2021 incident, re-imposing the case against the actor.

Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer of the western "Rust," was pointing the gun at cinematist Halyna Hutchins during rehearsals for a Santa Fe filming in October 2021 when the gun went off, killing the cinematist and wounding director Joel Souza. Mr. Baldwin said he didn't pull the trigger on the gun.

The lawsuit put Baldwin in legal trouble again and raised the possibility of a prominent actor in television and film for nearly 40 years in prison.

Special prosecutors initially dropped a similar charge against Baldwin, saying they had been informed the gun might have been modified before filming and that it might have malfunctioned. They later changed their minds and began filing a new charge against him after receiving the findings of new analysis of the weapon in question. /VOA
