The Supreme Court in Podgorica has accredited all those accused of involvement in a 2016 coup attempt to prevent Montenegro's membership in NATO.

The head of the Podgorica High Court Council, Zoran Radovic, said in announcing the release decision that "there has been no evidence that the defendants are guilty of the offenses they are charged with, so they are acquitted of the charges."[

The verdict cleared Russian nationals Eduard Shishmakov and Vladimir Popov, suspected agents of the Russian military intelligence service GRU, who were charged with organising and financing a criminal organization, with the aim of overthrowing the Government of Montenegro.

The Supreme Court has acquitted the leaders of the pro-Russian Democratic Front, the current speaker of the Parliament of Montenegro Andrija Mandic, MP Milan Knezhevic and their associate Mihailo Cagenovic, as well as retired Serbian Gendarmerie General Bratislav Dikic, as well as seven other Serb citizens.

No one from montenegro's Special Prosecution was present at the decision-making session.

All released persons were sentenced to a total of 70 years in 2019, but two years later, the Court of Appeals re-sentenced the case.

They were accused of planning to occupy the country's parliament during the October 2016 parliamentary elections, to assassinate then-Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and establish a pro-Russian leadership.

Russian officials had dismissed the claims, branding them as "absurd."

Montenegro, the small Adriatic Sea country that became independent from Serbia in 2006, in 2017 became nato's 29th member, fueling the anger of Moscow, which opposes the Balkans' involvement in the Western military alliance.
