New Year under alarm sirens, Russia carries out drone attacks in Ukraine in the

Air raid sirens sounded on New Year's Day in Kiev, as Russia launched new drone and missile attacks on the Ukrainian capital and other cities.

Sirens sounded for more than four hours in Kiev as the city came under attack in the late hours of December 31 and the early hours of January 1.

Ukraine's air force said it had destroyed 45 kamikaze, Iranian-made drones used in the attacks, including 32 drones that attacked after midnight.

The attacks come as Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled in his New Year's address that the Kremlin would continue its unprovoked war, which was originally intended to be a short-term military operation but has now entered the month the eleventh. Speaking from a Russian military base, Putin claimed that the "moral and historical right" is on Russia's side.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media after the attacks began on December 31. He criticized Putin for continuing to attack Ukraine during the holiday season, adding that history will not treat the Russian president kindly.

"There are several waves of rocket attacks on New Year's Eve. Missiles targeting people... No one in the world will forgive this. Ukraine will not forget," he said.

During his address for the New Year, Zelensky told the Ukrainian people that "I want to wish for all of us only one thing: victory".

In a Telegram post, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said one person had been killed and 22 others wounded, including a Japanese journalist, during the Dec. 31 attacks in the Ukrainian capital.

He added that 30 percent of Kyiv residents are without electricity.

Oleksandr Pavlyuk, deputy commander of Ukraine's ground forces, wrote on Telegram that civilian areas in three districts of Kyiv were damaged, including a private house and a hotel.

"For conquerors there is no law or custom of war," he wrote. "They think they will defeat us: if not on the battlefield, then through the destruction of our cities."

"But they are destined to fail," he said. "Because we will not stop fighting until we regain every centimeter of our land," Pavlyuk added.

The new strikes come days after Russia launched what it described as one of the biggest airstrikes against Ukraine since the war began on February 24, 2022.
