"The balance of the staged Serbia-Kosovo crisis is fatal"

The German-speaking media continues to focus on the developments in Kosovo despite the removal of the barricades: First steps towards reducing tensions, but skepticism remains and the conflict is not resolved.

The newspaper "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" under the title "In the dispute over the barricades, the first round goes to Belgrade, but Serbia should not rejoice too soon", writes that the West forced Kosovo to respond to the Serbian minority. But the more the pressure on Belgrade to recognize Kosovo increases. "The removal of the barricades marks a good day for the Serbian people, according to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. The opposing side was forced to accept the demands. But this is a short-sighted reading if you look at the conflict with some distance.

It is true that the Western mediators put the Kosovar side under great pressure. This is also shown by a joint statement of the USA and the EU that contains such points:

-Prishtina guarantees that there will be no secret lists of arrests for Kosovo Serbs.[...]

- The EU mission, Eulex, ensures that the criminal prosecution of minorities (read Serbs) is correct and fair.

- The EU and the US insist that the obligations of the parties from the previous agreement be implemented without delay. This means the Association of Serbian Municipalities, partially autonomous, which Prishtina rejects.

[...]

Many observers criticize the West's policy towards Serbia as softening. And indeed, you can, as Vucic does, see the end of the first round of the latest crisis as a success for Belgrade. But serious negotiations soon begin, where it is about the long-term relationship between Belgrade and Pristina. And here the Serbs do not have the good cards in hand compared to the Kosovars. There is a proposal on the table, that Serbia at least requires the actual recognition of the citizenship of Kosovo."

While the Austrian newspaper "Der Standard" writes under the title "Conflict between Kosovo and Serbia. Bad for the rule of law", that through the way the conflict was resolved by the EU, the most important good of Western democracies, the rule of law became negotiable. "It is particularly irritating that the EU and NATO accepted the conditions of militant activists, who are under the control of the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vučić and have no mandate. [...] The balance of the staged Serbia-Kosovo crisis is fatal: Kosovo cannot to ensure that all vehicle owners use the front plates, and cannot hold timely elections. People who illegally block traffic cannot be held accountable, and the country's police cannot enforce a monopoly of power ."

And the German newspaper "Ludwigsburger Kreiszeitung" writes that removing the barricades does not solve the conflict. "Kosovo remains a powder keg whose fuse is getting shorter and shorter. Currently, Russia's influence is a problem. Nothing pleases Russian President Vladimir Putin more than destabilizing the EU. And with Moscow's extended arm there is no short-term solution to the Kosovo issue in Belgrade.

And "tagesschau" in its analysis entitled "Barricades are removed, skepticism remains" writes about the first steps towards reducing tensions, and that the most important border point has been opened, but the strike of Serbian policemen continues. When the Serbian president announced the removal of the barricades, he did not do so without his characteristic dramatization, "tagesschau" writes. "I have been in the government for more than 10 years. I have had many difficult moments, where I could write books",..."but here I had difficult negotiations. [...]"Representatives of the Kosovo Serbs removed the barricades, but they are even more skeptical. Aleksandar Filipovic, one of the Serbian policemen on strike and former head of the operational police in the north, said that "if we remove the barricades, they will follow like rabbits", writes "tagesschau".
