The former leader of Myanmar, Suu Kyi, is sentenced to 33 years in prison

The former leader of Myanmar [Burma] democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi, was sentenced to seven more years in prison after her long series of trials ended on Friday, and she faces more than three decades behind bars.

She was imprisoned by the army that took power in August last year. Suu Kyi, 77, has been convicted of every charge brought against her, ranging from corruption to illegal possession of communications equipment, as well as flouting COVID-19 restrictions.

On 30 December she was sentenced to a further seven years in prison on five counts of corruption relating to the employment, maintenance and purchase of a helicopter for a government minister, in which she allegedly caused "a loss to the state".

Suu Kyi, sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison after 18 months of trials that human rights groups described as a sham, appeared in good health, a source familiar with the case told AFP. .

"All her cases have been closed and there are no more charges against her," said the source, who asked to remain anonymous as he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Journalists have been banned from attending the hearings and Suu Kyi's lawyers have been banned from speaking to the media.

Former Myanmar president Win Myint, who was charged alongside Suu Kyi in the latest trial, received the same sentence, the source said, adding that both would appeal.

Since the start of her trial, Suu Kyi has been seen only once, and that was in photographs broadcast by state media. Mainly, her messages were broadcast by defense lawyers.
