US President Donald Trump has reacted with humor to repeated assassination attempts against him, stating that he is not discouraged and that he does not allow fear to affect his duty.

During an event at the White House, where he met with reporters and members of Congress, Trump ironically responded to questions about personal security and the possibility of using a bulletproof vest.

"I can't stand looking 10 kilos heavier in a vest," he said, drawing laughter from the audience.

The president also added that he is not worried about his own safety: "I don't think about it. If I did, I wouldn't be as effective."

His statements came after the release of footage from a recent attempted attack on the Washington DC Hilton, where according to reports a gunman opened fire on a United States Secret Service agent, who immediately returned fire.

Trump stressed that the bulletproof vest worn by the agent had been crucial in saving his life, describing it with an ironic comparison: "It's like getting punched by Mike Tyson."

According to statements made at the event, the president has been the subject of three assassination attempts over the last two years, but has insisted that he will not change his way of operating or his public appearances.

US authorities have announced that investigations into the incident in Washington, DC are ongoing.
