US Navy uses artificial intelligence to detect Iranian mines in Hormuz

The United States Navy is increasing its use of artificial intelligence to detect Iranian naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important routes for global oil shipping.

According to reports, the American company Domino Data Lab has won a contract worth up to $100 million to develop technology that accelerates the identification of underwater mines and adaptation to new threats, Reuters reports.

President Donald Trump has previously stated that the US Navy is engaged in clearing mines in this strategic area, while tensions with Iran continue to affect the security of global energy supplies.

The new technology aims to train underwater drones to recognize new types of mines in just a few days, a process that could previously take up to six months.

"Mine hunting used to be a task for ships. Now it's becoming a task for artificial intelligence," said the company's chief operating officer, Thomas Robinson.

The system integrates data from various sensors, including sonars and visual systems, enabling the Navy to monitor the performance of artificial intelligence models and quickly improve their accuracy in the field.

The program is part of the Accelerated Learning Naval Operations project, which aims to make mine detection faster, more accurate, and less dependent on human intervention.

According to the company, the new technology could significantly reduce response times in crisis situations, allowing US forces to adapt within days to new threats in sensitive areas such as the Strait of Hormuz.
