The new heat wave in the USA, temperatures exceed 40 degrees in 11 states

The 'dangerous' heat wave has begun to settle over California and Oregon and is expected to last for several days. Millions of people will experience extremely high temperatures and a number of states will be on watch for a scorching heat.

With the prolonged heat has come the increased risk of any blaze turning into a wildfire as California is still battling the blazes of recent days. Extreme heat wave warnings are also in effect for much of the West Coast and southern regions of the United States.

The US National Weather Service has issued warnings for 11 states, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Washington - increasing calls for caution. Warnings for a hotter than normal are issued when the thermometer during the day reaches 40 degrees Celsius, while the air temperatures at night do not fall below 24 degrees.

In Oklahoma, Tennessee, East Texas and Louisiana, the warning had been in effect since the Fourth of July. Other states such as Arizona, Nevada and Oregon will also face scorching heat over the weekend, while for Washington, sweltering heat warnings last from Saturday to next Tuesday. That also applies to California's Bay Area, where several daily heat records were broken this week, as NBC News reports.

This major heat wave is expected to last up to 12 days, and could bring the region's longest stretch of extreme temperatures in almost two decades. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Death Valley could also break the world heat record over the weekend, with temperatures that could exceed 54 degrees Celsius.

People have been advised to avoid alcoholic, sugary or caffeinated drinks and to eat small, frequent meals throughout the day, rather than large, heavy meals.
