The Serbian Ministry of Defense has reacted to the statement by the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, that the forces of the Serbian army have approached about 50 meters near the border on Saturday, saying that the "security authorities" have stopped the "smuggling of illegally cut wood" ".
In a statement issued on October 13, the Serbian authorities accused Kurti of "continuing the disinformation campaign against the Serbian army and security forces."
"In the post on social networks, members of the armed forces of Serbia are seen in the land security area performing regular tasks for securing the administrative line, in accordance with the military-technical agreements and all other agreements signed," it was said in notification.
Among other things, it has been mentioned that military officials seen in the photographs have been preventing smuggling.
"The security authorities with their activities have stopped the illegal activities of transporting timber in the territory of Kosovo, in which case the timber thieves have fled to Kosovo", it was said in the reaction.
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said on Saturday night that Serbia has provoked again, "moving its troops about 50 meters close to the border line with Kosovo", more precisely near the Municipality of Kamenica.
Sharing some photos on Facebook, Kurti said that the Serbian military troops left after noticing that the Kosovo authorities had recorded their actions.
"The Government of the Republic of Kosovo has made unprecedented investments in building and improving the capacities of intelligence, security and defense structures, which are ready to prevent any threat to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our state".
Kosovo and Serbia share a long border line of about 350 kilometers. Over 60 percent of this line includes municipalities in the north of Kosovo, inhabited by a majority of Serbs. A good part is an area of ??difficult, uninhabitable terrain. The two countries reached an agreement on integrated border management in December 2011.
For Kosovo, the border line is a border, for Serbia it is an administrative line. The NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR, is responsible for the security of Kosovo's borders with Serbia, while the Kosovo Police is responsible for the rest of the border line.
However, according to a 2014 decision of the KFOR commander at that time, the Police can patrol the Kosovo-Serbia border line up to 1 kilometer close to the dividing line.
Currently, KFOR has over 4,400 military troops in Kosovo. NATO has increased its presence in Kosovo during 2023, after the increase in tensions in the north inhabited by a majority of Serbs./ REL
