The U.S. government says war between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah militia can be avoided - despite recent mutual attacks, National Security Council communications adviser John Kirby said on Friday.
"We still believe there is time and space for a diplomatic solution. We think that's the best way forward," Kirby said.
"War on the border between Israel and Lebanon is not inevitable. We will continue to do everything we can to prevent it," he added.
Kirby did not give details on the latest Israeli attack on lebanon's capital, Beirut - saying the Israeli military would make a statement about its operations.
He said he was not aware if the U.S. government had been informed in advance.
Despite worldwide calls for restraint, attacks continue between Israel and Lebanon's Shiite militia Hezbollah, prompting fears of a wider conflict in the region.
Regarding the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Kirby said Washington has not given up hope of reaching a ceasefire agreement and releasing the hostages.
"No one will give up hope. No one will stop working on it," Kirby said.
