A 42-year-old Italian woman died after being struck by lightning while on the beach.
Italian media reports that Pamela Di Lorenzo died after 10 days in a coma. She was pronounced dead in the late evening of August 12, and her brain death was confirmed in the afternoon.
The lightning struck her at noon on August 3, while she was on the beach in Alba Adriatica (Teramo) in Abruzzo where she lived with her partner and son.
The woman was in the most serious condition among the three people who had been electrocuted that morning. She had gone into cardiac arrest. While two others who were next to her were slightly injured.
The many tourists present on the beach shocked by the event had spoken of an "apocalyptic scene".
"There was a rumble and then panic," the witnesses said. The incident happened around 12:00 on August 3, after a short period of rain. But the beach was still crowded. "The sky was overcast and it had been raining for a few minutes, but there were still a lot of people."
The woman, known in Alba Adriatica and the surrounding area, lived not far from the scene of the tragedy with her partner and young son and worked in a bar in the same neighborhood. Family members have donated her organs.
