Turkey "holds the keys" to Syria/ Trump: Erdogan is a very smart guy,
Erdogan and Trump

United States President-elect Donald Trump said he believed Turkey and its President Recep Tayyip Erdogan were behind recent events in Syria, which resulted in the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

"Nobody knows who the other side is," Trump said of the latest developments in the war-torn country.

"But I know, Turkey. Erdogan is a very smart guy, he's wanted this for years and he got it. Those people who came in are controlled by Turkey and that's okay, it's another way to fight."

Commenting on the situation in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, Trump said the US could cooperate with Turkey in the region.

Asked what he would do with US soldiers in Syria, Trump said there are other ways and one of them is cooperation with Turkey.

"Turkey is a major power, by the way, and Erdogan is someone I've gotten along very well with. He has a great military and he's not tired of war. He's built a very strong and powerful military," Trump said.

Stressing that he believes Turkey is behind the forces advancing in Syria, Trump said that this is not a problem for him personally.

Trump said that no one knows what the future of Syria is after Assad, but that he thinks it is Turkey that "holds the keys" to Syria.

"Actually, I don't think you've heard this from anyone else, but I was very good at predicting," Trump said.
