Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, has warned Ukraine of "inevitable punishment" for the killing of top Russian general Igor Kirillov, who led Russia's nuclear, biological and chemical defense forces.

Medvedev, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, made the threat in a statement to the RIA Novosti news agency, saying: "The military-political leadership of the Kiev regime will face inevitable punishment for the murder of Kirillov. Realizing the inevitability of its military defeat, it undertakes cowardly and despicable attacks on peaceful cities."

How did the murder happen?

A powerful explosion in Moscow this morning has killed General Kirillov and his aide. Kirillov, who headed Russia's nuclear, biological and chemical defense forces, was killed southeast of Moscow, about four miles from the Kremlin.

Russian media reports that the explosive device was hidden in a scooter and was activated remotely, containing about 300 grams of explosives. A source in the Ukrainian security services confirmed to Reuters that Kiec was behind the attack, while Russian authorities continue to work to clarify the incident.

Ukraine had opened an investigation against Kirillov for the use of chemical weapons during the war in Ukraine, while he had been sanctioned by the UK for his role in the use of these "barbaric" weapons.

Some analysts have warned that this attack could lead to a further escalation of tensions between Russia and Ukraine, while Russian authorities have called for revenge and punishment of those responsible for the murder.
