Plot to kill Pope Francis with suicide bomb during Iraq visit revealed

The suicide bombers had planned to attack Pope Francis during a trip to Iraq in 2021, but were killed before they could strike, according to his autobiography.

British intelligence informed Iraqi police when Pope Francis arrived in Baghdad that a woman wearing explosives was heading towards Mosul and planning to blow herself up during the papal visit.

"A truck was speeding there with the same purpose," the 88-year-old Holy Father said in excerpts from "Hope: The Autobiography" published by the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera.

In the book, the Pope says he later asked his Vatican security team what happened to the suicide bombers.

"The commander replied laconically: 'They are no longer here,'" Francis writes.

"The Iraqi police had intercepted them and had them detonated. That hit me too: this too is the poisonous fruit of war," he recalls.

The trip to Iraq in March 2021 was the first by a Pope and took place in the midst of the Covid pandemic.

The northern city of Mosul had been the headquarters of Islamic State militants, whose terrifying rule had largely emptied the region of its Christian communities.

Despite bomb threats, the visit went ahead as planned under strict security measures.

The moment became one of Francis' most moving foreign trips. Standing in the ruins of a church in Mosul, he called on Iraqi Christians to forgive the injustices done to them by Muslim extremists and rebuild the country.

Hope: The Autobiography, written with Italian author Carlo Musso, will be released in more than 80 countries around the world next month at the start of the Vatican's Holy Year.
