Turkey sends drillships to the Mediterranean Sea, Erdogan: We will get what is
Recep Tayyip Erdogan

After a two-year hiatus, Turkey sends a gas drilling vessel to the eastern Mediterranean. For President Erdogan this is so important that he even traveled to Mersin in the south of Turkey to be present.

"Abdylhamid Han" will search for gas until it finds it, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during the inauguration of the new drilling vessel in the port of Merin. We will get "what is due to us". The ship "Abdylhamid Han" will first leave for the Iskenderun region, he said. The planned drilling area is located in northern Cyprus not far from territories over which Turkey disputes with Greece and Cyprus.

In principle, he rejects Greek and Cypriot reservations against Turkish drilling missions, Erdogan said, declaring that Turkey has the right to search for gas in its own territories: "We don't need to get permission from anyone."

The "Abdylhamid Han" ship, according to him, is a "Symbol for Turkey's new vision in the energy sector", Erdogan said in Mersin. According to Turkish media, the ship named after one of the Ottoman sultans will initially search for gas until September 7.

Constant strife between neighbors in the eastern Mediterranean

The conflict over gas reserves has been straining relations between Turkey and Greece for years. In 2020, the two countries almost clashed militarily, when the Turkish drilling ship "Oruc Reis" under the escort of warships undertook voyages in search of gas resources south of the island of Rhodos. The Greek navy was mobilized. Only after the departure of "Oruc Reis" from the disputed territories did the situation calm down.

Greece accuses Turkey of conducting research in a completely illegal manner. The government in Ankara rejects the accusations and defends the position that the gas exploration is in accordance with the law, since the waters where it is operated lie in the Turkish land arc. Both Greece and Cyprus as EU member states, as well as Turkey have claims to gas reserves discovered on the sea floor in the eastern Mediterranean.

Energy independence is increasingly being placed in focus in Ankara as well

In the first place, Turkey aims to discover and exploit gas reserves, writes Christian Schaller, researcher at the German foundation "Science and Politics", in an article. "But in the first place, Turkey also aims for maritime dominance in the region." The gestures that are now again becoming aggressive towards Greece, according to some observers, are partly also related to the elections that will take place in Turkey, explaining them to the electorate as nationalist gestures.

The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine has brought the energy supply aspect into focus. Last year Turkey got a quarter of its oil and almost half of its gas imports from Russia and is now trying to minimize this dependence.
