The Turkish minister provokes Greece: One day we can take the Greek island by

The Turkish Minister of Defense, Hulusi Akar, has increased tensions with Greece shortly before the launch of the new drilling platform in the Mediterranean, "Abdul Hamid Khan".

During his speech at the conference of Turkish ambassadors in Ankara, he again referred to the island of Kastelorizos, where he emphasized that the island is 580 kilometers from Greece and only 1950 meters from Turkey, that is, a distance that can be reached "by swimming".

"It is within swimming distance for the students of our military schools. They misunderstand what we say because that's where the students swim. A day ago, a Greek minister said "If they want to come, if they know how to swim" and we declared that "God willing, one day this can also happen", said Akar, referring to the previous statements of the Greek minister of Health, Nikos Panagiotopoulos.

Afterwards, Hulusi Akar spoke about the demilitarization of the Aegean islands. Specifically, he said: The terms of the Treaty of Lausanne are clear in Article 12 of the Paris Agreement, paragraph 18. They clearly state that the islands cannot be militarized. We, despite all this, are patient and say "let's talk".

The Turkish Minister of Defense provoked with other statements, mentioning that Turkey has military superiority.

"We say to the Greeks just this: Don't even think of fighting with us. War is a matter of numbers. The efforts you make for military equipment are a lot compared to your defense, but they are little for Turkey," said Akar.

Athens' response

The representative of the government, Yiannis Oikonomou, said that Greece is initially dealing with the navigation of the Turkish drilling platform, Abdul Hamid Khan, with the necessary vigilance and attention.

"We always do what needs to be done, with prudence and determination to ensure peace in the region", he emphasized.
He described Akar's statements about Kastelorizo as "exaggerated rhetoric and provocations, which have nothing to add to Greek-Turkish relations."

"Always in the face of challenges, rhetorical or not, the government has shown that it knows how to position itself calmly and decisively", he underlined, giving the guarantee that "national rights are absolutely protected on the basis of international treaties and preventive capacities, and are mainly based on the fact that the global community knows that Greece is a factor of stability and on the side of international law".

He sent the message to Turkey that Greece is not ready to take a step back on issues of its national sovereignty and in response to the "Turkish swimmers", he said that "it is a good idea to have a peaceful competition in the open sea, between the Greeks and the Turks. It is better to look at the issue in a calm way and with emphasis on international law in order not to create hotbeds of tension"
