The wiretapping scandal is rocking the Greek government headed by Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Two days ago, the director of the Information Service and the general secretary of the prime minister's cabinet resigned.
In a press conference on the issue, the head of government said that he was not aware that the head of the opposition party had been tapped by Greek intelligence in 2021, adding that he would never allow such a thing.
"Although everything was done legally, the National Intelligence Service underestimated the political dimension of that action. It was formally legitimate, but politically unacceptable. It shouldn't have happened and it undermined citizens' trust in national intelligence," Mitsotakis said.
The prime minister said that the latest case highlighted the defects of the Greek secret service and promised a renewal of this institution.
A few days ago, two journalists discovered that their phones had been tapped.
While on July 26, the head of the Socialist Movement (PASOK), Nikos Androulakis, revealed that his phone had also been targeted for wiretapping, which led to the resignation of two senior officials.
In a closed session in parliament on July 29, the head of the news service admitted to wiretapping two Greek investigative journalists. The secret services cited national security reasons as the justification behind tensions with Turkey in March 2020.
