Trump exempts smartphones and computers from heavy tariffs on China

Donald Trump's presidential administration has exempted smartphones and computers from the 125% tariffs imposed on imports from China, as well as other reciprocal tariffs.

The announcement was made late Friday by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), which said the equipment would be exempt from the 10% global tariff that Trump recently imposed on most countries, along with the much higher import tax on China.

The CBP announcement comes after concerns from technology companies that the price of electronics for American consumers could rise since many of them are manufactured in China.

The notice also contains exemptions for electronics and additional components, such as memory cards, solar panels and semiconductors.
