President Donald Trump has said he would consider allowing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resume the war in Gaza if Hamas does not respect the ceasefire agreement.
In a statement to CNN, he said that Israeli forces could return to the streets of Gaza "as soon as I say the word."
"What is happening with Hamas will be resolved quickly," the president said during a brief phone call.
Trump's statement comes at a time when Israel is accusing Hamas, a group designated a terrorist organization by the US government, of not fulfilling the agreement to hand over hostages, both alive and dead, as part of the agreement to end the fighting in Gaza.
This has caused growing anger in Israel, where authorities have informed the UN that humanitarian aid deliveries that were expected to be allowed into Gaza will be reduced or delayed, due to the small number of hostage bodies handed over. However, the fragile ceasefire continues to hold.
Point 4 of Trump's 20-point peace plan stipulated: "Within 72 hours of Israel's public acceptance of the agreement, all hostages, living and dead, will be returned." By Wednesday morning, all 20 surviving Israeli hostages had been returned to Israel. But Hamas had only handed over the bodies of four people, and the Israeli military said one of them was not an Israeli hostage. A source told CNN that four to five more bodies were expected to be handed over later this evening.
Trump noted that rescuing the live hostages was a priority in itself. “Getting those 20 hostages out was key,” the US president said.
In the days following the hostage release, violent clashes between Hamas and rival groups have been reported, including one incident that ended in a visible public execution. Trump has previously warned that Hamas must disarm or “we will disarm them.” His peace plan envisions a future in which Hamas would relinquish any role in governing Gaza, which would be demilitarized and placed under independent supervision. But the Trump administration has acknowledged that there is still work to be done to resolve Gaza’s future and that the deal that led to the hostage release is only Phase 1.
Trump told CNN that Hamas is currently “going in and cleaning up the violent gangs.” When asked if it was possible that Hamas was executing innocent Palestinians, he said: “I’m looking into that. We’ll find out. It could be gangs or something.”
Point 6 of the peace plan stipulates: “After all hostages have been returned, Hamas members who commit to peaceful coexistence and the surrender of weapons will receive amnesty. Hamas members who wish to leave Gaza will be given safe passage to host countries.”
What happens if Hamas refuses to disarm? CNN asked the president. “I think so,” Trump replied. “Israel will go back to those ways as soon as I say the word. If Israel were to come in and beat them up, they would.”
“I had to stop them,” the president said of the Israel Defense Forces and the Netanyahu administration. However, the president expressed optimism about the long-term prospects for peace, especially because of strong support from countries in the region.
Trump also said he is continuing to work to end Russia's war against Ukraine.
