OpenAI plans to expand the range of content on its popular chatbot ChatGPT, including erotic material, as part of an effort to "treat adult users like adults," said the company's chief executive, Sam Altman.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Altman stated that future versions of ChatGPT could be made more humane — “but only if you want it, not because we’re maximizing usage.”

This move, similar to Elon Musk's recent introduction of two sexually explicit chatbots on Grok, could help OpenAI attract more paying subscribers.

According to experts, this could also increase pressure on lawmakers to impose stricter restrictions on chatbot users.

The changes announced by the company come after a lawsuit filed earlier this year by the parents of an American teenager who took his own life. Matt and Maria Raine, the parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine, were the first to accuse OpenAI of wrongful death, criticizing the company's parental controls as inadequate.

The family included chat logs between Adam and ChatGPT, which show he was having suicidal thoughts.

Altman said that previously ChatGPT was "pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues."

"We understand that this made it less useful/enjoyable for many users who did not have mental health issues, but given the seriousness of the issue, we wanted to get this right," he added.

He stressed that the company now has new tools to "safely ease restrictions in most cases."

"In December, as we more fully enforce age determination and as part of our 'treat adults like adults' principle, we will allow even more content, including erotica, for verified adults," Altman said.

Critics say OpenAI's decision to allow erotic material shows the need for stronger regulations at the federal and state levels.
