President-elect Donald Trump is considering nominating Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as Secretary of Defense, replacing Pete Hegseth, whose nomination has been criticized.

Since Trump nominated Hegseth, a former Fox News host, to lead the US Defense Department, a sexual assault allegation has surfaced, as have questions about his qualifications.

DeSantis, who was elected governor of Florida in 2018, has yet to comment on Trump's election. The news comes as Hegseth, whose appointment was announced in mid-November, meets with members of Congress this week to discuss the new policies he will craft once he takes office.

Trump earlier when proposing the appointment of Hegseth emphasized the education of the former soldier and his military experience in Afghanistan and Iraq and that under his leadership the US military will be great again. But some Republicans have expressed reservations about confirming him for the top Pentagon role because he lacks extensive experience for the position.

Additionally, since Hegseth's appointment, a police report has emerged detailing allegations of an alleged sexual assault in 2017, allegations he has denied.

So far, two of Trump's top picks have dropped out. Chad Chronister on Tuesday stepped down to lead the DEA, while former Rep. Matt Gaetz resigned as attorney general a few weeks ago amid intense scrutiny over allegations of sexual abuse of a minor girl.
