The White House announced on Wednesday that it is imposing an additional 25% tariff on India, bringing the total of taxes against the United States' main trading partner to 50%.

"I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil," President Donald Trump said in an executive order.

"In accordance with the law in force, Indian items imported into the customs territory of the United States will be subject to an additional ad valorem tax rate of 25 percent," the executive order states.

The new tariffs will take effect within 21 days, according to the order, while the previously announced 25% tariffs will take effect on Thursday.

Trump's new tariff rate on India is now among the highest taxes on any trading partner of the United States. This is the latest sign that Trump is following the path of punishing countries that buy Russian oil, as he has stepped up his rhetoric in recent weeks due to President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

Trump last week said goods from India would be subject to a 25% tariff, in addition to a "penalty" for buying military equipment and energy from Russia.
