"We gave and received signals," what Putin told Trump's envoy in
Putin-Witkoff, three-hour conversation in Moscow

A meeting was held in the Kremlin between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin that lasted about three hours.

"Putin and Witkoff discussed the crisis in Ukraine and the prospects for a possible development of strategic cooperation between the US and Russia ," Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, who was also present at the meeting, told reporters.

"If we had to list the topics, the first is undoubtedly the crisis in Ukraine. The second topic was on the prospects for a possible development of strategic cooperation between the US and Russia ," he stated.

Ushakov described the conversation that took place as " very useful and constructive."

As the Russian news agency TASS writes, Ushakov said that Witkoff had received several signals regarding the Ukrainian issue, and that reciprocal signals had also been received from President Trump.

“The relevant signals were received from President Trump. Now the situation is such that our president has full information – that is, our signals, signals from President Trump and the results of these conversations have not yet been reported to Trump. Therefore, I would refrain from more detailed comments ,” Ushakov said.

"Let's see when Witkoff will be able to report to Trump about the conversation that took place today. After that, of course, we will be able to add something more substantial to my comments."

Also present at the meeting was Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and Special Presidential Envoy for Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries.

Witkoff arrived in Moscow at around 7:00 a.m. local time, where he was met at Vnukovo Airport by Dmitriev. About an hour later, the two took a walk in Zaryadye Park in central Moscow.

This is Witkoff's fifth visit to Russia since the beginning of the year. His most recent visit to Moscow took place on April 25, following a previous visit to St. Petersburg on April 11. On both occasions, he held meetings with President Putin.

This meeting comes as a deadline set by US President Donald Trump for Russia to accept a ceasefire in Ukraine approaches.

The US president had warned that Russia could face severe sanctions, or secondary sanctions on all those who trade with it, if it does not take steps to stop the "terrible war" in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Russia will only take serious steps towards peace when it lacks funds. He welcomed the threat of tougher US sanctions and tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil.

Expectations for a deal by Friday are low, as Russia continues major airstrikes on Ukraine despite Trump's threats of sanctions.
