Three countries block Russian oil embargo on EU

The leaders of the European Union failed to reach an agreement today on a new package of sanctions against Russia, while meetings on this issue are expected to continue tomorrow as part of a high-level meeting in Brussels.

Leaders are expected to agree in principle on a measure, but all the details and difficult decisions are left for later.

"We are not at that point yet," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said it was more realistic to expect an agreement to be reached next month.

The next summit is scheduled for June 23 and 24.

French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters that the much-needed agreement on the sixth package of sanctions is approaching, but without giving further details.

Some leaders expressed dissatisfaction that a consensus had not been reached.

The draft agreement, a document that could be reconsidered, envisions a six-point package of European Union sanctions banning oil imports by sea.

But Hungary, along with Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, depend on Russian oil and say they can not afford such a move. Hungary supplies over 60 percent of its oil and 85 percent of its natural gas from Russia. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban continues to oppose the Russian oil embargo.

He said his country needs assurances that it can be supplied with oil by sea, while Russian oil deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline would be stopped.

"At the moment there is no compromise. "We are ready to support the package, if there is a solution for Hungary's energy supply, which we do not have so far," Orban said.
