Working for a secret family: The foreigners raising Putin's alleged
The foreigners who are raising Putin's alleged children

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his alleged partner, Alina Kabayeva, have hired at least 20 foreign nannies, tutors and other caretakers to help raise two boys believed to be their sons. Most of the employees are from Western countries, including some from NATO countries that are at loggerheads with Moscow over the war in Ukraine.

The family spent hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to hire nannies to care for the children and teach them English and German, according to a large amount of documents and correspondence reviewed by Systema, the Russian research unit of Radio Free Europe (RFE/RL).

The documents cover the period from 2017 to early 2026 and include a wide range of materials related to the search, hiring and work of the nannies, such as contracts, emails, photographs and daily reports submitted by the foreigners on their activities with the children.

They offer a detailed look at one aspect of the secret family life of Putin and Kabaeva, the 2004 Olympic rhythmic gymnastics champion who is said to be his longtime partner and the mother of Ivan, born in 2015, and Vladimir, born in 2019.

Putin, 73, has two grown daughters with his ex-wife Lyudmila, from whom he divorced in 2014.

Neither he nor Kabayeva, 43, have confirmed that they are a couple or have children together, and the Kremlin works hard to keep Putin's private life out of the public eye.

Putin has presented Russia's war against Ukraine, now in its fifth year, as part of a civilizational struggle and a defense against what he claims are efforts by NATO and what he calls the "collective West" to weaken or destroy Russia and impose their will on the world.

In power as president or prime minister since 1999, Putin has regularly attacked Washington, the West and NATO. In recent years, Russian state propaganda has demonized Britain and the European Union in particular, while senior officials, including Putin, have spoken disparagingly of what they call “Anglo-Saxons.”

Shortly after the start of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Putin attacked members of the Russian elite who, according to him, are "mentally committed" to the West, warning that Russia's opponents would use them to "cause maximum harm to our people" and then throw them away.

To teach boys to be "educated Europeans"

However, one of the tasks assigned to foreigners employed to help raise the boys is to bring their English and German skills to the level of “educated Europeans” through full immersion in the language, according to materials reviewed by Systema.

The largest number of employees came from Germany, followed by South Africa, while others came from countries such as Britain, New Zealand, Austria, Ireland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Germany and Britain are members of NATO and among Ukraine's strongest supporters in defending it against Russian invasion. Like Germany, Austria and Ireland are members of the European Union. South Africa is a member of the BRICS group along with Russia, China, Iran and six other countries.

Systema found only one reference to an employee in Russia: a woman hired to teach Ivan music and introduce him to composers such as Sergei Prokofiev and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

However, alongside the focus on Western languages, there have also been formal efforts to ensure that boys are not taught about issues related to sex, gender or the LGBT community. These are topics that Putin has mocked as “gender freedom” and has signed laws that severely restrict gay rights, and has often linked them to Europe and the West in public comments.

The contracts reviewed by Systema prohibit caregivers from “imposing their religious, political or ideological views” on children, prohibit them from discussing sexual matters without prior approval, and specify: “Do not touch on LGBT-related topics under any circumstances.”

According to the materials, restrictions have also been placed on the freedom of movement of the foreigners, suggesting that they have spent most of their time working at an isolated presidential residence, between Moscow and St. Petersburg, known as Valdai, where Putin has spent much of his time over the years.

There is also evidence that he spent time in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, home to another luxury residence used by Putin, Bocharov Ruchei. But in research published in 2025, Systema found that Putin had rarely used that residence since the previous year, as Ukrainian drone attacks inside Russia had become more frequent.

The Russian REL service reported in April that 27 air defense installations have been erected in the area around the Valdai complex, many of them Pantsir-S1 missile systems.

Correspondence from 2022 shows that a 58-year-old English teacher who grew up in Canada and holds Irish and British passports was told she could not go into the city to shop or “visit various public places” during her free time. “Prepare a list of the things you need and we will buy them and give them to you after we deal with security agents,” she was told.

The pay of foreign workers appears to have changed a lot and increased over time. From a nanny who was paid 1,400 euros per month in 2019 to a salary that in some cases reached 7,000 euros, over six times more than the average monthly salary in Russia in 2025.

"Prudence, loyalty, silence and absolute obedience"

The contracts indicate that each caregiver was provided with a room in an apartment or hotel suite, with the proviso that she might have to share the space with another person, but would be guaranteed her own room and bathroom with shower.

The files show that some employees left their jobs before their contracts expired, others left of their own free will, while some potential caregivers traveled to Moscow or St. Petersburg, underwent interviews and examinations, and then returned to their countries.

A 34-year-old Austrian woman who had enthusiastically prepared for a job caring for a 4-year-old child and teaching him German was disappointed after arriving in July 2019 and initially staying in five-star hotels, as promised, only to find herself “in the middle of nowhere” in a small village near Valdai, she wrote to potential employers after they told her by email that she was not suitable for the job.

In a communication with Systema years later, she said that correspondence about the job was conducted with a high level of secrecy and that she was never told who she would be working for.

The materials show that the process of searching, hiring, and making financial arrangements with the men and women contracted to help raise and educate the boys was largely managed by Kabayeva's two cousins, Olesya Fedina and Yekaterina Golovacheva.

Neither Fedina nor Golovacheva responded to questions sent by Systema. Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, and a representative for Kabaeva also ignored requests for comment.

Systema also sought comment from some of the people the materials indicated were employed to help raise the two boys. One confirmed that she had been a nanny in Russia for three months, but was never told who she worked for.

"We received orders and information only through family aides," she told Systema, adding that "prudence, loyalty, silence and absolute obedience" were expected of employees.

She called her short stint in that job an "extraordinary experience" and said the family was always fair and "very generous," but suggested that the interaction with the aides was one-sided.

"I was just a person who took commands and orders," she said. /REL
