Snowstorm 'invades' the Balkans, the situation is most severe in

Heavy snowstorms have 'invaded' several Balkan countries.

Many countries, including Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro and North Macedonia, have faced challenges brought by intense snowfall.

Northwestern and western Bosnia were hit hardest by the storm.

Authorities say that, there, more than 200,000 homes have been left without power.

Many homes also lost access to heating and water services.

The heavy snowfall, which is still ongoing, is hampering relief efforts, prompting many districts and local regions to declare a state of emergency.

Some cities, such as Dvar and Bosanski Petrovac in Bosnia, were completely cut off from the outside world.

Road links to other cities were covered by more than 80 centimeters of snow. Local businesses, schools and many other civic facilities were forced to close.

Cars on some roads have been blocked for more than 12 hours as regional governments try to clear the roads.

Similar problems are also challenging Croatia.

Traffic is difficult due to gusty winds on coastal roads and snow in Gorski Kotar, Lika and Slavonia.

The authorities there have imposed a ban on the movement of heavy vehicles.
