Snowstorm paralyzes Bosnia

A massive snowstorm has left tens of thousands of homes in Bosnia without power on Christmas Eve and caused traffic chaos.

The storm has caused damage across the Balkans, with avalanches closing highways in Croatia and also affecting travel in Serbia.

The movement of heavy vehicles has been banned in all three countries and trains have been stopped in some parts of Bosnia.

Bosnia's state-owned energy company said the situation was "extremely difficult" in some areas, after heavy snow knocked down distribution lines.

Dozens of vehicles were stuck in the snow for 10 hours in the western part of the country overnight before they could continue their journeys, local television N1 reported.
