9.8 million Greek citizens are heading to the polls today to elect a new government. What is expected to happen from tomorrow will depend on the decision of the citizens.
Local media Protothema gives several different scenarios.
On Monday morning, that is on May 22, the Minister of the Interior, Calliope Spanou, will go to the office of the head of the Assembly, Constantinos Tassoulas, and will give him the file with the official results of the elections. Tasoulas then goes to the presidential palace to announce the result to President Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
The next moves will depend on the will of the citizens and how they have decided to divide the votes for the parties. According to Protothema, there is a good chance that an interim government will be formed and will lead the country to new elections, most likely on July 2.
The first possibility of forming the government envisages the appointment as prime minister of the leader of the party that will have the absolute majority of seats in the new parliament. But this scenario is considered impossible since with the simple proportional system at least 45%-46% is needed to make it possible.
If no party has an absolute majority of seats, it is the turn of the Greek President. If the polls so far are confirmed, she will first turn to Kyriakos Mitsotakis, where she will give him three days to determine whether there is a possibility of forming a government coalition. In the campaign, the head of New Democracy announced that he is for an independent government with only one party. According to him, this ensures the stability and speed needed to make decisions. However, he has declared that he will keep the mandate given to him by the President as required by the Constitution.
In any case, the only existing cooperation scenario on a real level concerns New Democracy and PASOK. According to the latest polls, both parties get at least 151 MPs, but this mathematical condition is not enough to cover the huge gap that Mitsotakis shares with Nikos Androulakis. In particular, this is about the condition set by PASOK for the appointment of a third person who will not have been elected by the people for the position of prime minister. Under these conditions, it is expected that there will be no cooperation between these two parties. But everything remains to be seen.
After the temporary prime minister is appointed, the parliament convenes, the new deputies are sworn in, and then by decree the President dissolves it again to announce the next elections, which can most likely take place on July 2.
