The White House has revived the theory that Covid-19 emerged from a Chinese laboratory, publishing the new version on a website that presents it as the "true origin" of the pandemic. This has been reported by US media.
The Covid.gov website, previously focused on promoting information about vaccines and testing, now presents a stark image of Donald Trump and criticizes former President Joe Biden's anti-pandemic policies. The site also takes aim at Anthony Fauci, Biden's former Covid expert, who has said that Covid-19 originated naturally.
The WEB page has five points aimed at bolstering the lab leak theory, noting that Wuhan, the site of the first known case of coronavirus, is also home to China's "main SARS research laboratory" and has a history of research conducted with "inadequate levels of biosafety."
"By almost any scientific measure, if there was evidence of natural origin, it would have appeared by now. But there isn't," the page reads.
The lab escape theory, once dismissed as a conspiracy theory, has recently regained popularity in the United States, especially after a congressional document revived the hypothesis.
While the debate remains unresolved, scientifically and politically, US agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Energy have come out in support of the thesis. Earlier this year, the CIA changed its official stance on the origin of the virus, saying it was "more likely" to have emerged from a Chinese laboratory than to have been transmitted from animals. The assessment drew criticism from China, which called it "extremely unlikely".
