A man from Kashmir, the area that is administered by India, says a job offer in Moscow had been trickery to send him to the frontline of the war with Ukraine.
VOA correspondent Muheet Ul Islam brings the 32-year-old's calvary along with several other Kashmiri countrymen.
For eight months, 32-year-old Azad Yousuf Kumar from Pulwama, Kashmir, desperately tried to abandon the Russian army and return to his home.
He says he was duped by an online ad for a job as a security aide in Moscow. He signed a contract in Russian that was not translated into his language. Mr Kumar says three days after arriving in Moscow with six other Indian nationals, they were taken to an unknown location, given uniforms and undergoing military training.
"I was injured during the first week of training and was hospitalised. After recovery, I searched to find my friends and countrymen and learned that they had been sent to war zones along with some Egyptians and Nepalese."
Kumar recounts that during his engagement with Russian forces, he opened trenches and built bunkers in eastern and southern Ukraine, working for days without enough food and water.
"I have no words to describe my suffering. Our only motivation was to stay alive and go home."
In Kashmir, Kumar's family was afraid after learning of the ordeals and dangers he was facing. They asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and parliament for help.
Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi reportedly raised the issue during the meeting in Moscow with President Vladimir Putin.
"Modi conducted two visits and helped bring it back. We repeatedly asked for the help of the authorities in getting them back. After a long wait, thankfully, most of those who were fooled have returned. "We are happy," said mother Raja Begum.
Kumar says he managed to survive after refusing to learn to speak Russian, while those who learned the language were sent with Russian forces to the frontline.
Kumar and 34 others returned to their home country. But he says there are many other Indians who were deceiven like him as he asks the government to help bring them back home. /VOA
