US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC+) to cut oil production was "unhelpful and reckless" for the global economy, especially for developing countries.

During an interview with the Financial Times newspaper, which was published on Sunday, she said that Washington is very concerned about developing countries and the problems they are facing.

She also criticized allied countries for delays in sending financial aid to Ukraine.

"The pace of money transfers to Ukraine is very slow," Ms. Yellen added, noting that some countries that had promised aid had failed to deliver it.

A few days ago, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC+ decided to significantly reduce production in response to the reduction in fuel prices. During a meeting in Vienna, OPEC energy ministers decided to cut production by 2 million barrels per day, starting in November.

The production cuts could benefit OPEC member Russia, while European countries have pledged to end Russian oil imports as soon as possible. Apart from a token cut in oil production last month, the drastic cut is an unexpected reversal, as OPEC had continued to increase production after deep cuts made during the pandemic.

OPEC+ said in a statement that the decision was based on "uncertainty about the future of the global economy and the oil market."

President Joe Biden expressed disappointment with the decision, which the White House described as "short-sighted".

Mr. Biden called on his administration and Congress to consider ways to increase U.S. energy production and reduce OPEC's control over energy prices. The organization's move underscored the growing gap between the United States and Saudi Arabia over energy policy.
