The German Minister of Defense, Christine Lambrecht, has said during a visit to Lithuania that NATO must do more to guarantee common security and to protect itself from any aggressive action by Russia.

"The fact is that we, NATO, must do more for common security, because we cannot know how far the illusions of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin go," said Lambrecht, as he visited the German troops engaged in the Baltic state.

"We have heard Russia's threats to Lithuania, which has implemented European sanctions on the border with Kaliningrad. These are not the first threats and we must take them seriously and be prepared," she said.

"The security of Lithuania is the security of Germany. It is this promise of common security that we must commit to today," she said at the Rukla military base in Lithuania.

Germany leads an international brigade of 3,000-5,000 soldiers in Lithuania. This force is part of NATO's efforts to strengthen its eastern flank, following the launch of Moscow's war in Ukraine at the end of February.

Lithuania borders the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad as well as the Kremlin's ally, Belarus. The war in Ukraine started on February 24. Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions. As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./REL
