Russia has no intention of using tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Friday, a day after Moscow's chief US diplomat criticized Western officials for "baseless" allegations.
Russia will not use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. This was confirmed by the Moscow Foreign Ministry, accusing those who suggested that Moscow could launch a nuclear attack for "deliberate lies".
As I have already said, we have repeatedly had to refute assumptions about the possible use of nuclear weapons by Russia during its special military operation in Ukraine. This is a deliberate lie. Russia firmly adheres to the principle that there can be no winner in a nuclear war and one should not start. "Last year, it was Russia that was able to persuade the United States and then the entire nuclear five to reaffirm their adherence to this principle," said Alexey Zaitsev, a spokesman for Russia's foreign ministry.
"Russia is aware of the real dangers posed by irresponsible behavior in this area," he said. Scenarios for the possible use of nuclear weapons by Russia are clearly defined in Russian doctrinal documents. "They are not applicable to fulfilling the tasks set out in the special military operation in Ukraine."
