A senior US official spoke to reporters on Tuesday about Russia's funding of political parties and coalitions in other countries.
The official said Russia has secretly given more than $300 million to political parties and candidates in dozens of countries since 2014, when the U.S. intelligence community noted an increase in such activities.
"As the intelligence community's analysis finds, President Putin has engaged in covert political financing around the world. Russia has secretly funded local political parties and politicians in over 24 countries over the past few years in an attempt to manipulate democracies from within. We think this is only the tip of the iceberg. And we've engaged with allies and partners to gather more information about this type of risk... We're sharing with over 100 countries the countermeasures we're taking), said the senior US official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"What is most shocking about this study is that we see the presence of covert Russian funding around the world... We are warning these foreign parties and candidates if they secretly accept Russian money. We have the opportunity to expose them, and we will expose them", he added.
Asked about concerns that Russia may be trying to influence the elections in the United States, the senior American official said that there is no question that this weak point also exists, VOA reports.
